South Korea- 16th April 2025~ Silloo We entered south korea through the island of Jeju, the largest island in korea. The island was formed out of volcanic activity. The rocks are black volcanic rock, the ocean is the deepest blue, the wind is strong, the surf is the purest white and together with windmills along the way, make the long drives on coastal roads a magical combination. In early days fishing was the only occupation and the turbulent ocean claimed many a fisherman's life. With the result that there are far.more women than men. Consequently men relaxed at home drinking and women did all the work including diving for shellfish etc. Today tourism accounts for 60%of the economy. Fresh water is scarce because of volcanic rock, hence agriculture is difficult. Korean food is delicious, from street food in the local market - we had large sweet.potatoes and also very large stuffed chillies which were batter fried like pakoras- they were out of this world. Also pork - barbecued at your table and served with a myriad accompaniments including seafood soup - it was all too yummy There are figures sculpted and there all over to protect the homes from natural calamities Canola (mustard i think) in the foreground. All roads are lined with these canola which are in bloom This road for about 10 km is lined with canola on the ground and cherry blossom trees which were in bloom over a week ago.
