I have always been fascinated by c of India mainland i.e Kanya Kumari ( Cape Comorin, during British rule)and wanted to visit it for once. So presenting an overview of our trip to a part of South India this June.
Day 1-Took coonecting flight to Trivandrum , from where reached Kanyakumari by road
Visited Vivekanand memorial and Thiruvallular statue ( famous poet of the south) on the same day.
Found out that there is also a shkati peeth in Kanya Kumari of virgin goddess , devi kanya kumari,( 9 year old parvati devi’s form) and the city has been named after that.
So next morning took an opportunity to visit the 3000 year old temple too , told to be built by shri Parsuram Bhagwan.
Annai resort is a good place to stay for a day as it is walking distance from the memorial and only one day stay in Knaya Kumari is enough.
I found these stone sculptures from Indian ancient kitchen really interesting for decor of a resort.
If seen nicely, one can easily identify the different shades of the three oceans which looks absolutely eye catching!!
It is believed that on the island Devi Kanya Kumari worshpped on one foot for Shivji and also killed demon Banasur and Swami Vivekanand swam to this island to meditate for three days in 1892.
Day 2- we travelled from Kanyakumari to Kovalam for a relaxing trip to the beaches
But due to monsoon all the beaches were closed for ahore activities but the weather was too pleasant
Few pics from the inside of the resort which had a complementary boat ride on the lake in evening and activities like cycling , tennis with a sea facing restaurant where the breeze was the purest.
Day 3- visited the famous Padmanabhaswamy temple at Tiruvanantpuram and also visited the Azhimallai shiva statue and took a boat ride on the back waters of the Poovar island
Padmanabhaswamy temple is considered to be the world’s richest Hindu temple , dedicated to Lord Vishnu ( sleep state on serpent) built around 6000 years ago . Built in Kerala and Dravidian style and belong to Travancore family . It has six vaults filled wth treasures and one vault has still not been opened.
Padmanabhaswamy means lotus arisjng from the navel of Vishnu jee and Brahma jee.on the lotus .
But it is all dark inside the room and statue can only be seen in parts from three different doors .
Pillars outside are of gold
Statue is 18 foot long and made of herbs and stone
A replica of the statue , but smaller is inside the one of the vault made of gold and diamond worth a lot.
The temple’s story is very fascinating and it is also kne of the 108 divya desams of lotd Vishnu It is believed that first appearence of Vishnu hee was from here
Puc from the web
The idol is seen inhree parts from three doors
Although I could not see the entire idol as it was pretty dark inside.
Priests do not put any lamps as Vishnu jee is supposed to be resting so it is better to visit druting an aarti , for whosoever wants to visit 🙏
Azhimala shiva statue near Poovar island
Shiva in form of Gangadeshwara ( Shiva holding Ganga river in His hair locks) in the backdrop of Arabian sea
Tallest Shiva statue in Kerala ,58 ft tall , built in 2020.
It is believed that Pandavas spent their exile for a while at this place too and it has an old Shiva temple also.
Day 4- started from Kovalam to Varkala
On our way visited the Jatayu Earth centre dediacted to women safety. Legends say that Jatayau fought for Sita with Ravana on this rock
Same day visited another 2000 year old Vishnu temple in Varkala
Janardana Temple
Was lucky to see the aarti and was a truly spiritual experience with no demand of any money .
Felt like the South Indian temples still have that aura of spritualism and faith . Felt like sitting for long there.
