Reykjavik(Iceland)

There are lots of museums in Reykjavik, will try and explore some on our last day in iceland. Today we start an 8 day ring road tour of Iceland. Iceland is a country of lot of mythology. Elves and trolls are part mythology. Vikings played an important part in iceland history. The viking Erik the Red was credited to having discovered Greenland Nothing much grows here except grass for animals because of volcanic activity and basalt rock which is all over Iceland

Nowadays they have started growing vegetables in greenhouse, farming is mostly sheep, horse and fodder We start our tour of the golden circle with the Thingvellir national park. It is designated as unesco world heritage site Walking along the ridge, of basalt rock. It is under the ocean but Thingvellir is the only place where it is above ground Iceland is beautiful waterfalls due to the melting os the glaciers. Gullfoss is the largest and is truly beautiful Iceland is full of volcanic and geothermal activity. It is known as the land of fire and ice Geysir is an area of geothermal activity with geysers erupting every 5 to 10 min, some constantly bubbling but not erupting, some dormant. Next was a visit to a horse farms. Icelandic horses are very fluffy and good-looking. Another beautiful waterfall was the Seljalandfoss waterfall. An interesting feature of this fall is that one can walk behind it. We spent the night in the slogan area. Our hotel was in the area in a beautiful landscapes around. View from our window. Observe the face of a troll in the in the rock face. This morning we are at the skogafoss falls. This area is the backdrop of several films, TV shows including the Shahrukh khan kajol song gerua Driving towards southern Iceland, beautiful landscapes along the way. A stop at Dyrholaey island where we saw the black sand beach. The landscapes are completely of another world. Unimaginably stunning Another beautiful black sand beach with caves with basalt columns, very dramatic. Lots of birds were also there After lunch was a hike to Katla cave The katla volcano is an active volcano which lies under the Myrdallsjokull glacier. There was a very major eruption 900 hundred years ago which caused the whole area to be covered by lava. The last eruption took place in 1918 which caused the glacier over it to melt and consequently flood the entire town of Vik. The town of VikThe journey to Katla revealed the most dramatic landscapes. A part of the journey was in a superjeep because of absence of road The entire glacier here is covered with black lava sand Our guide just hacked a bit to reveal the ice just underneath. The icebergs then enter the ocean, the waves then through the icebergs after breaking them up into small pieces on to the black sand beach. The diamond beach. The pieces of ice glistening in the sun look like diamonds and the sight is out of this world. There is a lovely lake in front of the hotel and you can even see some glaciers at a distance We arrive at the vatnajokull glacier, where we are going to hike. It is the largest in Europe and only one of the two where glacier hiking is permitted. There was a pretty difficult trek (for me not others) to reach the glacier, but it was worth it. Then armed with safety equipment, harness on the waist, crampons on the shoes, a helmet, and a pick axe we were all set. The glacier was stunning. We were shown how much the glacier has actually receded due to global warming. Today is going to be a restful day after yesterday's super activities. The morning started rather cloudy but seems to have cleared up. We drive along the east fjords of Iceland. Beautiful mountainous terrain. We pass colonies of swans as we drive by, black sand beaches etc. Today we are on our way to the Stuolagil canyon. The river very narrow and very deep We are in the diamond circle The Duttifos and Selfos falls Namaskaro pass is the next stop. This is the geothermal area, the cold water from the glacier meets the underground magma which erupts in gasses creating beautiful colours. We visited the beautiful fjord of Hauganes for a whale watching boatride all dressed in our dry suits which are designed to keep you afloat even if you fall in the water Today we are touring the snaefellsnes peninsula Deildartunguhver, where the hotel springs are the most powerful in Europe, used for making electricity. Reykholt a small village where lived Snori who wrote the history of the Vikings, this village had it's beginning with the Vikings The next halt is the viogelmir lava cave, the largest lava cave in Europe Gerouberg with the hexagonal basalt columns. A very long line of them, made by the action of the wind and rainWe are spending the night at the little town of Stykkisholmur where the film secret life of Walter mitty was filmed On the way to the Kirkjufell mountain, the Game of Thrones mountain The landscapes around it and on the way In saxholl crater erupted last 3500 years ago Some beautiful views of lava cliffs where we had lunch Our last day in Iceland, it's been a lazy day in Reykjavik, just loafing around exploring the city. But the highlight of the day was a helicopter excursion over recently erupted volcanoes and landing on the crater sites. A major eruption had taken place in 2021 which had caused flight disruptions over Europe because of spewing lava and smoke. We arrived in Greenland today. 80% of Greenland is covered with ice and there is some habitation is only in the coastal areas. As our plane made it's descent to Illulissat, we flew over the great ice sheet, miles and miles of ice. It was mesmerizing. Found it difficult to Photograph. The Illulissat ice fjord has been declared a world heritage site and all efforts made to protect the flora and fauna Today is was a full day excursion by boat to the Equi glacier. Throughout the journey we were accompanied by icebergs. The glacier did carve out quite a few times, but was difficult to capture on camera. However did get something. 1st stop, the harbour of Aasiyat The boat stopped at Sissimut the second largest town in Greenland after the capital Nuuk. It's a very pretty town. We had a two hou
