Mahakumbh 2025: Unforgettable Experience
Mahakumbh, the world’s largest spiritual gathering, is a spectacle like no other. This year, my spouse, Kalyani, and I had the unique opportunity to combine spirituality with academia as we traveled to Prayagraj for a conference organized by the Prayagraj Urological Society (7-10 February 2025).
The journey turned out to be much more than just attending a medical event—it was an extraordinary experience filled with devotion, adventure, and challenges.
Day 1: Arrival & First Impressions
We landed in Prayagraj from Ahmedabad on the afternoon of 7th February (Friday), eager to witness Mahakumbh firsthand. However, the real adventure began right after stepping out of the airport.
The traffic was unlike anything we had ever seen—an endless sea of people, bikes, rickshaws, and cars, all moving at a snail’s pace. The journey to Tent City, Sector 25, which should have taken a short time, stretched into an exhausting five-hour ordeal.
Upon arrival, however, the weariness melted away. Tent City was beautifully organized—clean, peaceful, and surprisingly comfortable. Right behind our tent, the sandy banks of the Triveni Sangam flowed gracefully, offering a serene contrast to the chaotic roads. Across the river, we could see the vibrant Akhadas, floating bridges, and illuminated spiritual structures.
Despite the exhaustion, we took a short evening stroll, met fellow delegates, and enjoyed a simple yet delicious meal. The cold night reminded us of the recent fire incident in Tent City—room heaters had been removed as a safety precaution.
Day 2: Spiritual Awakening & Conference Challenges
The morning at Mahakumbh is magical. At 5:30 AM, we woke up to a symphony of devotional chants, bhajans, and aarti resonating through the air. Stepping outside, the crisp morning breeze carried a sense of divine energy.
Our first stop? The Triveni Sangam at dawn. Watching the sunrise over the holy waters, with golden hues illuminating the riverbanks, was a deeply spiritual moment. The atmosphere was pure, sacred, and filled with an indescribable sense of peace.
The Conference & The Unexpected Adventure
Over breakfast, we learned that reaching the conference venue (Medical College) had become a logistical nightmare due to extreme traffic congestion. Cars and buses were being stopped en route, leaving motorbikes as the only viable option—graciously arranged by pharma representatives.
Riding through the congested streets of Prayagraj on a bike, weaving through devotees, saints, and processions, was thrilling yet chaotic. Some of us, including myself, opted to return early to the tent and missed conference dinner rather than struggle through the gridlock.
The evening was a beautiful contrast to the morning’s chaos. We meditated by the riverbank, soaking in the peaceful vibrations. The organizers arranged a grand Ganga Aarti and cultural performances, making it an unforgettable night.
Day 3: A Unique Morning & A Surprise Encounter
The Triveni Sangam sunrise experience never gets old. This time, we took a quiet morning stroll, meditated by the river, and even participated in a yajna, surrounded only by fellow tent residents—making it an intimate and serene affair.
One of the most fascinating sights was the devotion of foreign visitors—many fully immersed in rituals, some even wearing saffron robes. Their deep reverence for Indian spirituality was truly heartwarming.
Surprises: Prominent personalities precenc like common man
As we explored, we had an unexpected encounter with Anil Agarwal, Chairman of Vedanta Group. He was blending in effortlessly with the crowd, participating in rituals like any other devotee. After a brief conversation, we were struck by his humility and down-to-earth nature.
Day 4: Departure & The Great Traffic Woes
With our return flight scheduled for the afternoon, we left for the airport at 7 AM, knowing traffic could be unpredictable. And we were right! Despite taking alternate routes, it took four hours to reach.
Others weren’t as lucky—many missed their flights due to roadblocks and never-ending congestion. The chaos of Mahakumbh spares no one, not even VVIPs!
Conference
Kudos to the Prayagraj Urological Society and MN Govt Medical College for pulling off a well-organized event amidst this chaos. Their efforts made the conference an enjoyable experience despite the logistical challenges.
