Oslo(Norway)

Dear Silloo ji You had a great trip braving harsh weather to get glimpses of some amazingly gorgeous landscape. We had similar trip in March’25 but we started from Oslo, took train ride to Myrdal, Flamsbana from Myrdal to Flam, stayed at fjordfront heritage hotel Fretheim in Flam, took fjord cruise through Aurlandsfjord and Naeroyfjord to Vossvangen, bus ride to Bergen via picturesque town of Gudvangen. Weather was perfect in March as we were a big group of physicians from Indore and Bhopal. In Bergen, Mount Floyen via Floibanen funicular for great views of surrounding fjords, heritage walking tour of Bryggen and cruise in Osterfjord were highlights besides famous Hanseatic museum and cinnamon roll called skillingsbolle!

We flew to Tromso from Bergen and then onward journey by coach to Rovaniemi via breathtaking Lyngen Alps and town of Kiruna in Swedish Lapland. A visit to snow hotel in Jukkasjarvi near Kiruna was awe-inspiring. In Rovaniemi we stayed at original Sokos hotel in Vaakuna on the banks of frozen Kemijoki river. Arktis icebreaker cruise in Kemi was a daylong excursion from Rovaniemi. It’s frozen Gulf of Bothnia, a part of Baltic Sea. It’s not Arctic Ocean! We missed going to Ranua zoo for arctic animals but we did go to underground Arktikum museum and science centre to get to know history of Finnish Lapland. Train journey to Helsinki from Rovaniemi aboard Santa Claus express watching northern lights was a lifetime experience. Eckero line cruise to Tallinn across Baltic Sea was awesome with some spectacular views from the deck. We didn’t stay in glass igloos as I didn’t find it worth the money and we can’t ensure sighting northern lights. Igloos in Ranua, Kemi or even inside Santa Claus holiday village aren’t that great. Real igloo experience is in Finnish Lapland at a place called Saariselka / Kakslauttanen Arctic village. A short flight from Rovaniemi to Ivalo airport is very convenient and time saving. Lake Inari is Finland’s 3rd largest lake and not too far from this place. We missed going to Saariselka as we didn’t get enough igloos to stay! You had a wonderful trip to remaining Scandic countries as last time you did Iceland, Denmark, Sweden and, now more elusive, Greenland. Nuuk is very much happening these days with military exercises compared to when you landed there from Reykjavik! 😃 Thanks for sharing I’m posting some pictures of our trip for more insight into the land of trolls and Vikings with rich Sami culture! Mount Storsteinen via Fjellheisen cable car for eclectic views of Tromso and surrounding fjords! Tromso Storgata (Main Street!)
